Based on 3 hours/week schedule, the total course length is 108 hours in 36 weeks in 9 months. There is no obligation to take all 9 months; the payments are made on a monthly basis and students can quit at the end of any billing month. But of course it requires at least several months to get a certain grasp of any language. This first program corresponds roughly to an A1 level. As longer as there are enough students in the class, the program can continue towards next levels, extending to a few years.
The course is held once a week for three hours. To be exact, each session is 50 minutes + 10 minutes pause. The course is done live-online (via Zoom, Skype, GoogleMeet or Teams). Students receive a link before each class to attend online.
The main course content consists of basic language education activities such as reading, writing, speaking, listening, comprehension, learning new vocabulary and grammar elements, sentence structure and sentence analysis. In addition to the standard curriculum, language elements such as pronunciation, idioms, songs, poems, and literary analysis will also be studied in a certain order.
Throughout the course, we follow the standard curriculum currently used in basic Greek education. We will provide the main curriculum textbook in digital format free of charge. Apart from that, our teachers will always feed the students with various free supportive materials.
All teachers are native speakers of the language. They have been teaching successfully for several years, and they all speak a degree of English as an intermediary language. Teachers also have a substantial knowledge of the historical, social and cultural aspects of their society, a knowledge which they will happily convey to their students.
Our Greek course aims to make the student proficient in reading, writing, listening, understanding and speaking Greek. Although the level that can be reached at the end of the course varies according to the individual effort of each student, a student who will complete 108 hours of education with an average performance; will have learned the alphabet, spelling, basic literacy, and the basic grammatical structure of the language to a great extent, will have a serious vocabulary, will be able to gain a certain amount of expression in daily-social language, will be able to follow the Greek visual and audial media, albeit with a limited understanding. In addition, the student will gain a certain knowledge about Greek history, culture and social structure.
We grant our institutional certificate to all those students who have completed a program. To be clear and honest, our certificate does not have any national or international official recognition. Nevertheless, if the previous practices are any indication, it still does have a validity and helps to open certain doors.
-A stable internet connection. -Download Zoom and Skype applications to your computer or laptop. -During the class, your voice/microphone must be open; you may turn off the camera if you wish so. -You should have a very basic knowledge of English to be able to communicate with teacher.
Pre-registration means that you are reserving a seat for the class. You input your name and contact details to our pre-registration form and that's all. No payment is required at this point.
Usually a few days before the class start date, we finalize the actual registration. You will be required to make the payment for the first month. After the payment, you are registered and ready to start the class.
You will make payments on a monthly basis, at the beginning of a new billing month. Each 4 week is considered a billing month. We offer a variety of payment options including bank transfer, credit card and crypto payments. We will provide payment info during the registration.
It is your own responsibility to attend all the classes you have paid for. There will be no refund for unattended classes. Similarly, unattended classes don't roll over to next month. On the other hand, our teachers will do their best to make a quick recap of a missed class with the student, depending on their availability.
If the number of students in a class decreases below 3 participants, we may cancel the class at the end of a billing month. Those students who wish to continue the course, will be integrated to another same-level class, if we have one.
The Greek Language is the foundation of Western civilization and dates back to about 4000 years. A branch on its own within the Indo-European language group, Greek is written with the Greek alphabet, which has been the source of written literature for almost 3500 years. The Greek alphabet, which took its origins from the Phoenician alphabet, was also the source of the emergence of the Latin and Cyrillic alphabets. Besides being the language of Ancient Greek literature and philosophy, Greek became the cradle of Christianity and, more broadly, Western civilization, and later became the official language of the Byzantine Empire. It deeply influenced the Western languages, to such an extent that it is estimated that there are currently 50,000 words of Greek origin in English. Being the official language of Greece and the Republic of Cyprus, Greek is estimated to be spoken by approximately 14 million people, half of which is the Greek diaspora spread across the United States, Australia, Canada and various European countries. Countries such as Turkey, Egypt, Italy and Ukraine also have very small bits of Greek communities speaking the language.
We would like to give some reminders and advice about the nature of language education to our prospective students who are considering joining our language courses. A language course should not be confused with hobby-style activities aimed at dissipating individual frustrations. We would especially like to remind you that the language education is a tough work that requires intense self-study. In this sense, we should not forget that the 9-month period in question is an introductory language education, and we need to set aside a period of at least 2-3 years in order to have a better command of the language and to speak it comfortably and effectively. So, if we don't have strong reasons to learn a language, it's quite possible that we get bored in the second month of the course...
On the other hand, the student's own personal performance will be a significant determinant in his development. The competence of the teacher is of course important, but it should not be forgotten that the teacher is only a guide after all, it is the student who will do the main work. Therefore, in addition to the training period, which is once a week and for 3 hours, the student will also work for at least three hours on his own, fully implement the recommended study methods, and feed himself with individual readings other than the course material, will provide a rapid and qualified development. When all these factors affecting language education are well planned, with a patient and careful study, from the first months of the course, the student will enter a cultural universe that he is not accustomed to and will become a completely different person as his adventure in this new language progresses...
