Ethnic Language and Culture Courses
Language and culture courses of ethnic groups living in and around Turkey.  In these courses, some of which are conducted for the very first time in the country, we mainly focus on those ethnic groups which have faced the state repression for decades. In addition to teaching their languages, we also examine history, culture and social structure of each ethnic group. Education is mainly organized for group lessons with private tuition also being available.

Ethnic Dance Courses
Kurdish Dances

Our Kurdish dance education is done through temporary workshops, on once-a-month basis. The workshops include basic Kurdish dances which are most popular among the people. Of the large variety of Kurdish dances, some can be learned in minutes, while others would require a longer and more intensive education.

Greek Dances

We are proud to be the forerunners of Greek dance education here in Turkey. Having started more than ten years ago, we teach more than fifty different dances. On the other hand, we strongly reject the spoilt and touristic fashion  which overshadows the real richness of Greek dance culture. Our Greek dance courses run on a regular basis with one or two classes a week.

Roma - Gypsy Dances

Roma-Gypsy dances are, and have always been, quite popular in Turkey. Reflecting the ever-vivid lifestyle of Roma people, their music and dance is widely embraced and performed at every possible occasion. But this music and dance culture can now be seen performed by those social segments which could actually be very hostile to Roma people. We try to raise a sensitivity towards the Roma-Gypsy people, in our regular dance classes running once a week.

Armenian Dances

Once upon a time quite rich and popular, the Armenian music and dance culture had to cope with decades of silence and inactivity. Indeed, the Armenians of Turkey would rather prefer to be part of Greek music and dance in their social lives. This trend seems to change now with the emerging Armenian music and dance groups. The highly ceremonial domination of Armenian music now gives way to a more social sort. In context of this new trend, we provide temporary workshops to give an idea about Armenian dance culture.

Laz Dances

Laz dances are a great fun! Living in the mountainous Eastern  Black Sea coast of Turkey, the Laz people are untiring dancers... Especially in summer times, you would see them dancing all night in large circles with bagpipe players in the middle. Astonishingly, majority of Laz people in their authentic area know how to dance their dances. So our Laz dance classes, held on a regular basis, mainly address the new urban-Laz generation and other people interested in these dances.

Bosnian Dances

Bosnian dances are almost totally an unknown phenomenon for most people in Turkey. The Bosnian dance and music culture have mainly survived among those segments still living in their Bosnian ghetto-type neighborhoods. Happily, this wonderful culture now starts to attract attention not only from the Bosnian-originated, but also from other people as well. We organize temporary Bosnian dance workshops to promote this culture in the greater society.

Meetings, Presentations, Campaigns
Ecology & Environment

Geoaktif periodically hosts a number of meetings, discussions and presentations about ecological and environmental issues. The themes of the events are not necessarily political; the spectrum is rather wide, from studying birds of Turkey, to discussions about the slow movement. Apart from the scheduled events, an endless agenda should not be hard for you to guess; when and how will we be able to get rid of the poison called urban life?

Gender & Minority Works

Living in a country with huge gender and minority problems, we strive to devote some of our  time and energy to these pressing issues. We try to raise awareness with all possible means. Our works typically include seminars, discussions, presentations on special dates and anniversaries. From time to time we cooperate with other individuals and institutions to focus on practical works, such as gathering support for a specific hot issue.

Specific Campaigns

Turkey's agenda is generally very hard to foresee; certain issues can suddenly explode and then be forgotten in less than one week time. Despite such a changeable agenda, there still are various fixed issues that have been going on for years. So whenever we can do something, or we have something new to say, we run tiny campaigns and try to make heard our low voice!

Translation, Publishing and Editorial Works
Translation

We have firm and able translators here at Geoaktif! We generally do social translation, that is, translating material about social issues to/from a number of local and international languages. While we charge reasonable amounts for bulky translations that would take a long time, we also do a lot of voluntary translation for those in need of such material, depending on our availability of course. Another work we do in this field is to educate new translators to cope with ever-increasing material!

Publishing

Another important project at Geoaktif is our newly founded publishing house called Geoaktif Yayinlari. The  project has two main lines of publication. One is to create and provide written linguistic material for those ethnic groups which lack such material. The other is to open discussions on those social issues that are deliberately ignored or have not received sufficient attention. A number of textbooks for ethnic languages and books questioning marriage and nuclear family have already been published, with a lot of similar material set to come out soon.

Linguistic Works

As a center dealing with many languages, we put a special emphasis on the relationship between languages and social issues. We are well aware of the fact that the creation of nation-states has got a lot to do with the suppressing of other cultures. The cultural destruction created by nationalism can only be reversed by showing people that all languages and cultures have huge common features. So in the linguistic workshops we organize from time to time, we focus on history of the languages, etymology and different writing systems.

Private Lessons, Scheduled & Special Events
Private Lessons

Most of our lessons, workshops and presentations are structured according to group participation. But we also get many private requests. Some individuals would want to advance faster, while others would want a more targeted studying. And so, apart from our scheduled group lessons, we also offer private lessons. These private lessons are especially useful for international friends who generally have a limited time here. Durations and frequencies of private lessons are set by and between teachers and students.

Scheduled Events
Majority of our events are scheduled and announced a few weeks or months before they start. Our language and dance classes generally run from September to June. But we usually start many extra classes in between as well. We also have a fixed event; this is our Friday night gathering, an event going on for seven years now. Our students and friends meet at Kaliteras, our cafe upstairs, every Friday night. They chat, discuss, quarrel, drink and dance till late in the night... Should you be nearby a Friday evening , definitely come and join us...
Special Events

Once or twice a month, we have some special events here at Geoaktif. The special events can be a concert, a benefit gathering, a commemoration and so on. While we find enough time to announce most of the special events, some of them take form all of sudden and are set as late as one day before. But these special events are always very interesting and also entertaining... Depending on the availability of the space, you can also organize your special event here at Geoaktif. Contact us for the details.
